PATTERN MAKING
BASIC
Definition: Simple patterns with minimal components, intended for straightforward garments.
Example Garments: T-shirts, tank tops, basic leggings, elastic waist shorts.
Characteristics: – 1โ€“2 pattern pieces (front/back, possibly sleeves)
– No lining or minimal construction detail
– Standard sizing and fit
– No special fabric handling
STANDARD
Definition: Garments with moderate complexity and more pattern pieces or detail.
Example Garments: Button-down shirts, dresses with darts/seams, pants with zippers, hoodies.
Characteristics: – 3โ€“6 pattern pieces
– Requires shaping elements like darts or pleats
– Some technical construction (e.g., zippers, collars, waistband)
– May include lining or facings
– More fitting adjustments required
COMPLEX
Definition: Detailed patterns for intricate or highly technical garments.
Example Garments: Tailored jackets, gowns, outerwear, activewear with paneling, specialty garments.
Characteristics: – 7+ pattern pieces
– Advanced construction: linings, boning, multiple closures
– Fabric requires special handling (silk, leather, stretch mesh)
– Custom or draped elements
– May include technical specs or grading requirements
PROTOTYPE/SAMPLE CREATION
BASIC
Definition: Simple construction for basic garments that require minimal labor and little to no specialized machinery or techniques.
Example Garments: Basic T-shirts, unlined tank tops, simple pull-on pants or shorts.
Characteristics: – Straightforward sewing (no zippers, minimal seam finishes)
– Single fabric type
– 1โ€“2 fittings at most
– Minimal or no trims/hardware
STANDARD
Definition: Garments with more involved construction techniques or features requiring greater skill and time.
Example Garments: Button-up shirts, dresses with pleats or darts, lined skirts, joggers with pockets and drawstrings.
Characteristics: – More involved assembly (e.g., inserting zippers, setting sleeves, pockets)
– Multiple fabric types or linings
– May involve 2โ€“3 fittings and pattern tweaks
– Moderate use of trims, fastenings, or hardware
COMPLEX
Definition: High-difficulty garments that are either heavily detailed, structured, or require specialized techniques or machinery.
Example Garments: Outerwear, waterproof jackets, seam sealed activewear and swimwear, technical apparel, tailored blazers, formalwear
Characteristics: – Intricate or layered construction (e.g., boning, tailoring, quilting, seam welding/bonding, seam sealing)
– May require specialty machines (e.g., coverstitch, walking foot, bar tack, hot air seam sealing machine, heat-bonding machine, ultra sonic wedling machine)
– Fittings may include multiple rounds of revisions
– Use of specialty fabrics (e.g., neoprene, leather, chiffon)
– Heavy use of notions, fastenings, interlinings, or finishes
